Chapter 2.
Introduction to Human Behavior Psychology
Human behavior is complex and dynamic, and this implies that the behavior of an individual depends on multiple factors, including the environment, genetics, instance, level of education, and age, among others. When human behavior is analyzed from a psychological perspective, human behavior entails the entire spectrum of emotional and physical behaviors that human beings participate in such as biological, social, and intellectual actions as well as how they are influenced by culture, attitudes, rapport, ethics, and genetics, among other factors. In this manner, human behavior is a complex interaction of emotion, actions, and cognition.
Relatedly, since actions capture everything that can be seen, then actions are a behavior component. For instance, actions can be captured via eyes or physiological sensors. An action refers to the transition from one state to another. These actions occur at different time instances such as muscular activation to sleep, sweat gland activity, or food consumption. Regarding cognition as behavior, cognition outlines mental images, and thoughts that one carries and can be both verbal and non-verbal. Verbal cognition may include statements such as "I have to wash my clothes," and, on the other hand, a non-verbal cognition may include the imagination of how the project will look after reworking on it. Therefore, the skills and knowledge by understanding how to deploy tools in a beneficial manner, such as vocalizing songs constitute cognitions.
Additionally, emotions are behavior and are considered as a comparatively short conscious experience defined by intense mental activity and a feeling that is not impacted by either knowledge or reasoning. As expected, emotions manifest from a positive to negative scoring scale. Enhanced arousal can trigger other aspects of physiology that are reflective of emotional processing, such as heightened respiration rate. As such, emotions can only be inferred indirectly, much like cognition via monitoring facial expressions and monitoring arousal, among others.
Psychological View of Behavior
The investment model concerns viewing human behavior in the form of work effort directed toward creating change. For instance, if Richard goes to watch a movie at the local theater, then the act of going to the movie is a form of investment. In this manner, the need to elicit the desired outcome motivates specific human behavior. If Richard gets to meet fellow fans and feels happy, then this can be regarded as the return of this investment. Akin to any other form of investment, human behavior occurs when one considers the cost-benefit-analysis of the desired outcome. For the case of Richard, he must consider time, calories, risks, and opportunity costs of going to watch the match at the local stadium.
It can be argued that the motivation to invest our actions in a specific behavior seems to emanate from evolutionary influences that make us prioritize food, sex, territory, food, and higher social status over other states of affairs. It also appears that behavioral traits, like temperaments and dispositions. For example, extroverted individuals find stimulating social situations more contending compared to introverted people. The learning history of a person influences the investment value system against this backdrop.
